What Exactly Is a Ghost Job?
A ghost job is a listing that stays live long after the role has been filled, or was never real to begin with. Companies keep them up to build a "talent pipeline," create an illusion of job market growth, or simply forget to take them down. For job seekers, it means wasted applications. For business owners, it means wasted time and eroded trust in the hiring market, and negative public perception.

What This Means for Business Owners
Ghost jobs aren't just a job seeker problem. They ripple through the entire hiring ecosystem and directly impact your business's bottom line. When ghost jobs flood the market, your legitimate openings compete against thousands of dead posts, and candidates develop "application fatigue," meaning your role gets less attention.
Ghost jobs also inflate job opening statistics, masking the real supply-demand dynamics you need to make smart hiring and expansion decisions. Experienced candidates know ghost jobs exist, too. The best ones skip listings that look stale, generic, or too good to be true, even if yours is legitimate. And if you're benchmarking your hiring speed against industry averages, ghost jobs are padding those numbers and giving you a false sense of performance.
Methodology
Clarify Capital scraped 176,268 unique job listings from Indeed, across 49 industries and every U.S. state in February 2026. We calculated the age of each posting by measuring the number of days between its published date and our collection date. Listings that remained active for 30+ days were flagged as potential ghost jobs.
